Big Night An evening at Taverna Lucifero with Chef Lillo Trastevere, Rome 2015
Dale had just finished giving a presentation for the USBG at a little ancient bar in Trastavere. We were very hungry and the bartenders suggested we try this great little place called Taverna Lucifero that had just opened… he began to explain the directions but decided it would be best to walk us there so he guided us through the narrow cobblestone streets –a turn here, a turn there, not too far at all.
In the doorway stood a very large man, almost as wide as he was tall, filling the entire doorway. Buongiorno! he exclaimed and with a big smile and led us to a cozy little table in the back. After treating us to a taste of a wonderful amaro, Chef Lillo suggested some things we must taste and taste we did, all night long! Some of the most exquisite dishes imaginable. ”Come back again tomorrow, he told us as we left: “I have some wonderful amaros you must try!
So the following night, despite the wind and rain, we set out on the narrow cobblestone streets to return to Lucifero’s. We knew we were very close yet could not find it. We walked for a least an hour in the thick fog, down every street searching for the little restaurant where we had enjoyed such a sublime dinner. Since it was newly opened there was no listing in the directory. Chef Lillo had given us a business card - which I found in my pocket, but it was soaked: the address, hand written in ink, was now completely illegible. By now the wind and rain had made shambles of our umbrellas and drenched our clothes. We finally gave up and ducked into another restaurant, soaked to the bone and wondering if the previous night had simply been a dream, a gastronomic fantasy out of the twilight zone. - Jill DeGroff
