In 1920, as the dark clouds of Prohibition descended, Bacardi began promoting Cuba as a tropical paradise to escape to. Hemingway was one of the many Americans who flocked there as cocktail culture began to boom around the world. It did not take him lon to fall in love with the island and the people. In1932, Papa, as he came to be called, and his third wife, Martha Gellhorn, moved to their beautiful home in Havana. There, at Finca Vigía, Hemingway wrote some of his best works. His favorite place to hang was La Floridita, where legendary barman Constantino Ribalaigua, created a special daiquiri just for him called the Papa Doble.
My painting imagines Hemingway at the height of his career, enjoying a great drink and happier times. --Jill DeGroff
