“Years ago I began collecting cocktail books. I soon realized that mixology was an amazing art, but we knew so little about those who invented it, like the great Jerry Thomas. That’s what got me passionate; I wanted to take this art out of obscurity and let it stand next to the other great American traditions. During this time, I was a professor of English literature at St. John’s, but I never liked it. One day a friend of mine, who worked at Hearst publications, called to tell me they were going to put the 1949 Esquire Handbook on their website and needed someone to edit and organize the recipes. He wondered if I could do it. I wrote some prefaces for them, added more ideas of my own, and loved it so much, I quit being a professor and started writing full-time.”   –David Wondrich
