The direct translation of the phrase, "eau-de-vie" from French is, "water of life" but in simpler non-metaphysical terms an eau-de-vie is fruit distillate or spirit. An eau-de-vie can be produced from any fruit and they are more common than you might think. One common form of eau-de-vie is the Austrian version referred to as Schnapps. They come in many shapes, sizes and flavors. Reisetbauer's Cherry (aka Kirschen) Schnapps are among one of the more intriguing flavors, made 100% from cherries grown by local farmers. They use about 70 pounds of cherries to produce just one bottle. This spirit comes with intriguing notes of baking cherry pie (as could be expected), as well sa wet earth, and ripe stone fruits - nectarine & plum, as well as a touch of herbal notes.
