Donegal had not had a legal distillery in more than 100 years until Sliabh Liag Distillers built The Ardara distillery in 2020. Due to the nature of whiskey making, we won’t see the produce of those stills for a few years yet.

In the mean time however, the folks at Sliabh Laig have released an extraordinary series of blended whiskies, inspired by the not-so-legal traditions of Donegal’s past. It was common for Donegal whiskies to be peated. While this is traditional in Scotland, it’s not common in the other counties of Ireland.

There are three iterations of Silkie in varying levels of peat smoke.

Silkie Legendary Irish - Just a whisper of campfire in the distance.

Silkie Legendary Dark Irish - The level of a moderately peated scotch.

Silkie Midnight Irish Whiskey - You’re in a small cottage with a peat fire burning.
