Matt Smith runs Blacksmith Cellars. While the rest of his siblings went into a more staid & stable profession of finance or accounting, he pursued his passion in winemaking. A bit of a “black sheep” in the family, hence the label “Blacksmith”. Matt launched Blacksmith Cellars in 2003.
He has been a winemaker for a couple brands at the Rock Wall winery, a place that does custom crush for several small brands. So no only does he get to use their equipment for his own project, he has seen a lot of growers coming in with small batches to process and has gotten access to all sorts of interesting fruit. So he makes tiny lots of numerous different wines, rather than blending everything together.
The Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 came from a single vineyard in this valley. Only 460 cases were produced. It is 80% Cab Sauv, 18% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, aged in all French oak.
His primary cooper is Taransaud, and he includes some of their prestigious top of the line T5 barrels in his Cabernets. The staves are air dried for 5 years instead of the normal 1-3 which is virtually unheard of. This results in a softer and more integrated oak.. It shows a nice purity of fruit, ripe but not at all over the top, full and approachable with great structure. It is classic Dry Creek Cabernet. Enjoy with a great steak.
