The Landot is positively charming. Most of the dry white Bordeaux we see in this price-point is primarily sauvignon blanc with some Semillon in the background. The wines tend toward the lean and crisp and can be quite charming.
Landot is another matter entirely. This wine is has 40% Semillon to Sauvignon Blanc's 60%. Heck, if this were the Senate, Sauvignon Blanc couldn't even get a conviction! (Please note that joke takes no sides).
The Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc play nicely here to create a 1+1=3 scenario. The laser-sharp acidity of the sauvignon blanc and the minerality of the Graves region are an excellent contrast and counterweight to the richness of the Semillon. The nose is bright and fruity with persimmon and pear, but also creamy with a touch of orange peel. It feels rich on the palate but it still has that racy acidity and bright minerality.
Lovely as an aperitif or with fish, mushrooms or white meat!
This wine is produced by Chateau Caronne St. Gemme, though their name does not appear on the label. The Landot Rouge from Caronne St. Gemme is a small bottling of old vines Cabernet Sauvignon from the Haut Medoc. I don't have a lot of information on the Landot blanc, as it seems to be very different indeed. Allz I know is, it's delicious and delightful and an excellent value.
