We here at Stage Left have been HUGE fans of Johannes Selbach and his wines since being introduced to his wines over 30 years ago. We make it a point to tatse with Johannes at least once a year, be it here in New Brunswick, or at the family winery in Germany.
Since 1661 the Selbach family has owned vineyards in the Mosel region. Their main treasure is simply what nature presents us with: excellent vineyard-sites, and old, ungrafted vines on steep, south-facing slopes planted on heat-retaining, mineral-rich, rocky slate soil. Their philosophy of winemaking is "hands-on" in the vineyards and "hands-off" in the cellar. Most of Selbach Oster wines are still fermented and matured in the traditional oak "Fuder"-barrels supplemented by a small number of stainless-steel vats. They do not use new oak for Rieslings to preserve the delicate structure of subtle fruit and crisp acidity as purely as possible
Winemaker Notes
Now the "beerenton" enters (the flavor of BeerenAuslese -quality berries); it has, and can carry, more sweetness; thus a dialectic is established that swirls the palate around; gorgeous fruit and a clean slatey finish. The Mosel Spatlese of the vintage? Could well be. (5-15 yrs.).
Vilage & Vineyard - Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, 2012
Tasting Notes:
Aroma - scents of ripe, yellow stone fruit and orange zest.
Palate - flavors of ripe apricot and peach, with a hint of herbs and a touch of “salty” minerality. The finish is reminiscent of apricots and stones.
Some wine enthusiasts describe it as “bottled sunshine” with deep minerals and a touch of sweetness..
