Staglin Family Vineyards traces its history back to the 1860's. Through layers of inheritance, litigation and bankruptcy, In 1963 the parcel sold to the Sullivan family with marriage ties to the de Latour family who owned Beaulieu Vineyards (BV). Already having a home, the Sullivans parceled off the home and sold it as a separate home site. Under the watchful eye of Andre Tchelistcheff (considered the father of modern Calif. winemaking) the prune orchard was removed and new vines were planted for BV’s exclusive Georges de Latour Private Reserve label.
In 1985, the Staglin family purchased this historic estate on the Rutherford Bench. With a strong respect for the former proprietors they worked closely with Andre Tchelistcheff to bridge his knowledge of this unique land. In 2007 they purchased the original Steckter home, reuniting it with the surrounding acreage of which it had been a part for 140 years.
Winemaker Tasting Notes - At first a bit reticent and brooding, with a swirl and a breath of air the 2017 Staglin Cabernet awakens into an energetic cascade of red and black fruit deepened by dollops of earth, resinous woods and pinched herbs. An opening blast of tar inflected boysenberry and black cherry glides into a granular midpalate of star anise infused cassis and molasses-drizzled warm figs complexed with notes of camphor, seasoned alder and hint of hyssop that is surprisingly approachable, finely-grained and imminently enjoyable now.
88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot
