Villa Calcinaia is an estate located in the Greve in Chinati sub zone of the region of Chianti Classico. The Capponi family has owned the estate since 1524, currently celebrating their 500th Year of continuous family ownership. Sebastiano Capponi, The Count of Tuscany, runs the estate - overseeing the winemaking, as well as the international sales and marketing efforts. in addition to a full range of Chianti (and other indigenous wines), the estate has olive groves which produce olive oil, bees forhoney and herds of goats for goat cheese.
The Villa Calcinaia Chianti Classico 2020 is a textbook example of what a Chianti Classico should be.
Vines palnted between 1959 - 1975 yield grapes that produce wine that is first fermented in stainless steel tanks, aged in 3000 ltr oak casks (effectively neutral casks), blended in cement vats and finally aged another 6-12 months in bottle. The wine is made for near term drinking - 3-5 years from vintage date. But with proper storage, the wine can age well beyond that. 20-25 years is possible, if you have the will power and discipline to wait!
Color is ruby red with garnet shadings, flavors of ripe cherry and spice. The perfect wine for you Sunday night pizza and pasta.
