Maison Roche de Bellene is a prominent wine producer based in Burgundy, France, with a distinguished reputation for crafting exceptional wines that epitomize the region's rich winemaking traditions. Established by renowned winemaker Nicolas Potel, the estate is known for its unwavering commitment to producing wines that reflect the true terroir of Burgundy's diverse vineyards. Utilizing both modern and traditional winemaking techniques, Maison Roche de Bellene creates wines that showcase the distinct characteristics of each appellation, allowing the unique flavors and nuances of the grapes to shine through.
Nicolas Potel founded Domaine de Bellene in 2005 after acquiring several old vine plots in prime locations across Burgundy. With a background as a skilled winemaker, Nicolas gained valuable experience at Domaine de La Pousse d’Or in Volnay, where his father, Gérard Potel, was at the helm. The estate's vineyards span from Santenay in the southern part to Nuits St Georges and Vosne Romanée in the north, boasting vines aged between 50 to 110 years, cultivated using biodynamic principles and hand-harvested. The winemaking approach is non-interventionist, relying only on minimal additions of sulfur to the wines.
Nicolas maintains a natural and meticulous vinification process, abstaining from the use of cultured yeast, sugar, acids, nutrients, and enzymes. For red wines, the grapes are sorted, with 40% destemmed and the remainder fermented as whole clusters. Fermentation occurs in either stainless steel tanks or old oak casks at controlled temperatures up to 32°C for 15 to 25 days. The wine is then gravity-fed and aged in oak barriques for 12-15 months, using 1-3-year-old barrels. White wines, on the other hand, undergo direct pressing as whole bunches and naturally ferment in oak barrels for about 12 months before bottling.
