We here at Stage Left have been big fans of Chris Dearden for many years (since he was GM / COO at Robert Biale Vineyards). It is only recently that we've been able to taste Dearden Wines. In March 2024, we held a tasting at Stage Left at which Chris' wines were very well received. We are thrilled to bring you 8 of Chris' wines.
Owner-Winemaker Chris Dearden found his first introduction to wine as many of us do: around the dinner table amongst family and friends. Raised in an agricultural town in the Central Valley of California.
Over the years, Dearden has worn many hats, working his way from winemaker to winemaker/general manager, consulting winemaker to now achieving his lifelong goal of owning his own vineyard and winery.
Dearden cites his time working with cooperage (Barrel maker) Seguin Moreau as most influential on his winemaking style and abilities; working in tandem with first growths and grand crus allowed for an unobstructed view of the highest level of winemaking possible.
2010 marked the beginning of a new chapter for Chris when he established the Dearden Wines Portfolio which today includes flagship Sleeping Giant Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot noir and Chardonnay, as well as several other wines.
The cornerstone of the brand is Dearden’s Carneros vineyard property which is planted to five different clones of Pinot noir and a small amount of Chardonnay on an 11.6-acre parcel.
The History of Little Giant - The “Little Giant” on the label is a tribute to the Newfoundland breed, two of which you may find lounging about the winery on any given day. These dogs are sturdy, friendly giants that were historically bred as a working dog on the eastern seaboard. Stories are told that these dogs were brought to sea and used to pull sailors back to the ship if they fell overboard in storms. Furthermore, they were known to actually tow small ships to shore by putting the aft lines in their mouths and swimming.
Winemaking & Tasting Notes - This wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, and then aged in Dolce barrels for two months, giving the wine a roundness and full-body while still retaining the bright lively pear, melon and honeysuckle we expect in Sauvignon Blanc.
